House trailer axles usually have smaller bearings and spindles than a normal axles designed for a specific weight. This means the spindle and bearings are more prone to cracking/fatigue/failure a/c a lower factor of safety by design. Road conditions can change the rate at which these components fail, too. Gravel or washboard roads, subject the components to higher rates of cyclic loading, and pot holes induce shock. As axles are flexing, "cracking" is happening. Be it on an atomic scale, when enough energy has been absorbed by the components and they receive a sudden jolt or load, they will fail, at times explosively. Big bearings and axles, at loads well under their designed carrying abilities don't see this, hence their factor of safety is now very high. If you play with matches, eventually you will get burned.
