Mark's thread on houses for sale and some of the responses to my comment about 900 square feet being small got me to wondering. My family was considered odd because there were only 4 children. The house I grew up in was 1200 square feet because the family that built it had 14 kids. I grew up in Wisconsin on a farm about 5 miles from the Mississippi River in the 50s. One neighbor had 4 girls, 5 boys. One had 7 boys. One had 4 girls and twin boys. This was a normal size for a family. When you have big families, you tend to have big houses.

What I'm wondering is, did I grow up in a weird part of the country with a neighborhood full of extra-large families? What were the family sizes where you grew up.
